What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a small screw or cylinder, made from Titanium alloy. It acts as a replacement ‘root’ of a tooth and can support a crown or bridge, or it can be used to secure dentures in place.

About Dental Implants

The implant system consists of:

  • the implant itself, which is inserted into the bone;
  • the abutment, which is attaches to the implant,
  • and the crown or bridge, which attaches to the abutment

Overall treatment time for a standard implant, from initial consultation to final fitting of the crown, is typically 6 – 9 months.

An additional use of implants is to anchor dentures, particularly in older patients where the gum has shrunk due to bone reduction.  Instead of carrying a crown or bridge, the abutment incorporates a press stud that clips the denture in place.

There is also the “mini-implant” system, where the implant and abutment are incorporated into a single unit.  These systems can be used where there is only a small gap to be filled or to retain dentures using the “press stud” fastener.   The mini-implant is much quicker to fit than traditional implants with benefits seen immediately the implants are placed.
